The Art of Emotional Embodiment

The art of emotional embodiment is a gentle, soft process of feeling into the pain or trauma that is trapped within our body.

Acknowledging this trauma exists, and sitting with it until you understand the reason it was trapped in the first place, is quite an art form. You must allow your body to guide you to this deeper emotion and core issue. This can sometimes be quite an emotional journey, but at the same time also very liberating and freeing.

It’s one of those practises where we can go as deep or as shallow as we feel safe or feel called to, and can be done either on our own, or guided by a practitioner, or in a group setting.

When our bodies are put in a stressful or emotional situation, we tend to go into a fight or flight response. If we stay in that situation for prolonged periods of time, the only way our body can cope is to trap the trauma so it effects us for a shorter period of time. Unfortunately, if not dealt with, these trapped emotions and traumas can cause major illnesses deep within the body, and cause emotional reactions when they are triggered by similar situations.

A perfect example of trapped trauma on a cellular level is; as a child you experienced something that seemed traumatic at the time, but in the big scheme of things you don’t even remember it now. Then 20 years later you experience something relatively small and can’t understand why you reacted in such a huge way. It’s trapped trauma, your body was responding to the cellular memory from years ago that was left unresolved.

With emotional embodiment, you can gently work with this trapped trauma and start to release it.

As you can imagine, our bodies have experienced these traumas over and over throughout our lifetime. Our experiences can affect us in a way that means we can’t even see what’s really at play, because our mind is protecting us from going through that experience again.

Symbolically, like an iceberg, emotions can be much larger underneath the surface than ever imagined, but once you allow the warmth of your love and understanding to shine on the situation it’s able to melt away.

The beauty of working in a co-created space is that you can be with these emotions and this past pain, as you’re guided by someone who has the ability to hold, teach, and support you to do this, so you can be in control of your own personal healing.

Here’s a small process that you can just sit with right now, without putting too much stress on your nervous system:

  • Close your eyes and take three deep breaths, feeling the air come into your body, move down into your belly, and then exhale, feeling it move back through you and out.

  • As you sit and feel into your body, pay attention to anywhere that’s calling for your attention. It might be a tight area or some pain in your body, just curiously explore what’s going on.

  • Allow yourself to be guided to the part of your body where you feel the most sensation in this moment and just breathe into and send energy to that area - without overthinking it, wondering if you’re doing it right, or even creating a story to explain why your attention is going to this area.

  • Continue breathing and just softening and relaxing into this part of your body, allowing yourself to just be with it, without any judgement or pressure, just breathe and be with this sensation.

  • If anything comes up, trust that you’re ready to be with it. If not, trust that just breathing and being here is enough.

  • Take a few more breaths and allow yourself to come back to the room.

This is such a simple starting point to being with your body and starting to explore embodiment. As women, we can become so disconnected from our bodies due to all the social pressure and conditioning that we’re exposed to in our day-to-day.

Embodiment is a powerful healing exploration that can bring up a lot of old pain, so please practise discernment if you start this practice on your own, allowing yourself only to go as far as feels safe. If it starts to feel like a lot, you can simply open your eyes and focus on your breath.

The most powerful embodiment experiences I have had are when I’ve been guided through a process with a trained healer. If this feels like something that you would be interested in diving deeper into, I would love to support you in your embodiment journey.
